Applying for Bredesen Center fellowships
Overview of Application Process:
- Complete Intent to Apply form
- Complete UTK Graduate School Application
- Send interest letter, resume, and three letters of recommendation to bredesencenter@utk.edu
The application deadline for both the Energy Science and Engineering PhD program and the Distinguished Graduate Fellowship program is January 31, 2013. All supporting documentation must be received by January 31, 2013. In order to be admitted into either program, student applicants must fulfill the general admission criteria for the Graduate School at the University of Tennessee. In addition, the student must have a Bachelor's or Master's degree in a field of science or engineering. Of course, students with other undergraduate degrees may also be admitted on a case-by-case basis, determined by the Bredesen Center Graduate Coordinating Committee. Dependent on the student's background, additional coursework may be required to satisfy corequisites and prerequisites.
Applicants must first complete a brief online Intent to Apply form, ain addition to completing a graduate school application for The University of Tennessee, Knoxville. If applicants are interested in both the Energy Science and Engineering program and the Distinguished Graduate Fellowship program, the online Intent to Apply form only needs to be completed once. Once you have expressed your intent to apply to one or both of the Bredesen Center programs via the online form, it is absolutely necessary that you proceed with application to the UT Graduate School and follow up by supplying all of the required documentation to supplement your application. Once the application to the graduate school has been completed, the Bredesen Center requires that you send additional materials before your application will be reviewed. All materials are to be provided directly to the Bredesen Center program at bredesencenter@utk.edu. Please provide the following materials:
- A one page statement of research interest
- A copy of your resume or CV
- Three letters of recommendation
All letters of recommendation must be received by January 31, 2013. For ease of process and to ensure confidentiality, the letters of recommendation can be emailed directly from your recommenders. Please instruct your recommenders to include your name in the title of the email and ask that they attach their letter in PDF or Word format on letterhead.
If you are applying for the Distinguished Graduate Fellowship, there may be additional requirements with UTK departments you wish to pursue your degree through if you are not applying to the Energy Sciences and Engineering Ph.D. program. Please be sure to follow up directly with those departments to ensure you have completed the required application process for that specific department.
Students currently enrolled in graduate programs at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville may apply to join the Bredesen Center program upon the completion of a degree (e.g. M.S.). Current University of Tennessee, Knoxville graduate students that wish to transfer into the Bredesen Center program to complete a graduate degree must obtain a letter of support/permission from their current department head. If you are already a graduate student at the University of Tennessee, there is no need to reapply to the Graduate School; however, there are eligibility requirements associated with those who can be considered for these programs. If you are a current graduate student at UTK and not nearing completion of your Master's degree, you must obtain a letter of support/permission from your current department head in order to be considered a candidate for Bredesen Center programs.
